So I started reading the book " Genetically Engineered Food: Changing the Nature of Nature." It is a good book although I learned much of the information while watching the documentary " The Future of Food. " If you don't already know about this subject it is well worth getting either the documentary or a book on the subject. I think as mothers we have an obligation to understand and know what is in our food and where it comes from before we feed it to our families. We are under the assumption that our food is the same as it has always been-but much of it is not. We consume corn that has been designed by man, corn that has had its DNA reconstructed by inserting a virus into the DNA of the corn. This corn is labeled an insecticide and will kill insects that eat it. Ever heard of BT corn. This corn might be in your produce section of the grocery store and you wont know it because the government does not require for genetically engineered food to be labeled to inform consumers of what they are getting. How about a tomato that has fish DNA inserted into it in order to keep it from freezing. Yum! If you are allergic to fish you might want to think twice before you buy a tomato.
What about food ownership? Does it seem right that a handful of giant corporations should patent food plants, and have exclusive rights to control our food. If you want to grow your family some vegetables in your garden you will have to pay the corporations for the right to grow their patented food. Want to save the seeds for next years garden? Sorry! The plants have a genetically engineered "terminator" gene so they will not reproduce and you'll have to pay the corporation again for seeds.
Farmers who have been growing their own variety of a particular food (like corn) and had GM corn seeds blown onto there land and mix in with their crops have been sued and paid corporations for infringing on their patent rights even though the farmer didn't intentionally plant the GM seed nor even wanted it there.
We still have no idea of the risks to our health when we ingest genetically engineered food. We could have long term health damage. Other than those who have immediate allergic reaction, there hasn't been any research to determine the safety of the food.
GM food isn't cheaper, healthier or tastier so why are we having it forced upon us without even knowing it? I think it is important that we wake up. We take action. Our food supply is being threatened and does anyone know or care? You won't hear about this stuff on your local news. CNN won't be making GM food headline news.
What can you do? Do the research get the information. Protect your family and share with just one other mom you know.
